In support of the school district’s vision and mission, Bainbridge Schools Foundation raises funds, gathers resource and acts as a catalyst to involve the community in public education.  Bainbridge Schools Foundation – “Bridging the Gap”.
Amount of grant or funding need $12,874.74
Purpose of funds (200 words or less, please)
Every year the Bainbridge Schools Foundation awards grants to teachers for creative, engaging teaching experiences and opportunities for their students.  This year there were 44 grant requests totaling close to $42,000.  However, our available funding for grants was only $30,000.  This left many of our grant requests unfunded or only partially funded.  Microscopes for a High School Science teacher, books for our elementary libraries, Sustainable Agriculture Field Trip Opportunities and experiences for our elementary students, a Wii System and games for special needs students for physical opportunities that they don’t normally have.  These are just some of the grants that we couldn’t fulfill.   Further details on each unfunded or partially funded grant can be provided upon request.

Board Governance Workshop - Effective board governance is critical to ensuring the health and sustainability of our local human service non-profits.  The 2009 Board Governance Workshop sponsored by HHHS was extremely well received by the 11 agencies and 4 partner organizations associated with HHHS.  This prompted a request that HHHS offer this type of workshop on an annual basis.

The workshop would cover the role of the nonprofit board as well as best practices for creating a healthy, productive board culture.  Participants will:
·       Learn the basic roles and responsibilities of nonprofit boards
·       Evaluate own board’s current performance of these responsibilities
·       Understand how to organize and focus the board’s work
·       Identify steps to take to improve board dynamics, board member satisfaction and retention
·       Craft a customized action plan to strengthen board capacity

Name of organization: Bainbridge Island Arts and Humanities Council
Website
: www.artshum.org
Effective date of IRS tax determination letter confirming 501(c)(3): 1988
Contact person: Morgan Smith, Executive Director
Email address: morgans@artshum.org
Phone: 206.842.7901
Organization mission statement:  The mission of the Bainbridge Island Arts and Humanities Council is to create an environment on Bainbridge Island in which the arts and humanities flourish.
Amount of grant or funding need:  Seeking 10 donors at $1,000 each
Purpose of funds (200 words or less, please):  The Bainbridge Island Arts and Humanities Council serves the Island’s cultural community.  This includes advocating for arts education, cultural organizations, individual artists, the Island’s history and heritage, the humanities, public art, and promoting the economic vitality of the arts.  Because of a drastic reduction in City funding in 2009, awards to community cultural groups were reduced by 57% compared to the prior year.  At a time when they are needed most, the reduction in City funding and the economic downturn have also lead to a reduction in support services to our community’s cultural organizations and artists. Your gift will assist with rebuilding community cultural grant programs, support BIAHC’s own programs such as Celluloid Bainbridge and the Island Treasure Awards, and allow BIAHC to further its efforts in supporting organizational best practices and collaboration among the Island’s cultural organizations and artists.

This will fund an entire classroom for a residency with a professional teaching artist. These projects also function dynamically as part of the classroom teacher's professional development in arts integration within the academic curriculum. Currently there are 5 classrooms in need of funding at Blakely; 6 at Wilkes; 7 at Ordway, 8 at Sakai.
Purpose of funds (200 words or less, please): Now in its eleventh year, BI Arts Education Community Consortium is an award-winning innovative community program that mobilizes involvement of community arts organizations, businesses, professional artists, families, individuals, and government in support of the arts in our schools.  The program is administered by BI Arts and Humanities Council. Programming in seven visual arts and performing arts media reaches 3,500 public school students on the Island, grades K-12.  In over 10 years the program has grown from placing two teaching artists in four classrooms, to more than 35 professional teaching artists collaborating with over 50 classroom teachers to provide arts integrated into academic curricula for experiential, more meaningful learning opportunities for our students.
