Phone: (206)

Organization
mission statement: Helpline House invites
the community into a circle of giving and receiving
help: Neighbor to neighbor – one neighbor at a time.
Amount of grant or
funding need: $1,290
Purpose of funds:
“Paper or plastic?” will soon be a question of
the past for shoppers on the island. You will
either have to bring your own bag or pay a small fee
for a reusable one. With fewer bags in
circulation, donations of used bags -- both paper
and plastic -- to the Helpline House food bank will
soon come to a halt. How can we avoid the cost for
purchasing an average of 700 brown paper bags per
week? We want our food bank customers to be
environmentally sensitive and want to offer reusable
bags as an incentive to play an active role in the
future of our planet and in the quality of their
lives. By reducing the cost to purchase bags we can
purchase more food. Our request of $1,290 will
provide our customers with the necessary number of
reusable bags based on household size.

Organization
mission statement: The Bainbridge Island Land
Trust’s mission is to preserve and steward the
diverse natural environment of Bainbridge Island for
the benefit of all. To achieve this goal, the
Bainbridge Island Land Trust acquires interests in
land having significant or potentially significant
conservation values such as scenic vistas, wetlands,
open spaces, tidelands, forest, unique plant and
animal habitats and stream and wildlife corridors.
We work with private landowners to protect their
land using land protection agreements called
conservation easements. We also work with a variety
of partners to acquire land for parks, trails and
public use.
Amount of grant or
funding need: $4,500
Purpose of funds:
Bainbridge Island Land Trust is
seeking funds to support our purchase of a Trimble
GeoXT Handheld or similar state-of-the-art Global
Positioning System (GPS) device. This submeter GPS
receiver combined with a rugged handheld computer is
needed to substantially improve the accuracy of
information we gather in the field and to document
that information in a visual way, and in a usable,
accessible format that can be shared with other
natural resource agencies and environmental
nonprofits.
Utilizing this device in conjunction with our
recently upgraded Geographic Information System
(GIS), the Land Trust will be able to provide a
snapshot of natural attributes (such as wetlands,
streams, vegetation communities, wildlife dens or
nests, etc.) on the Island. We will also be able to
create complex maps of our conservation easement
properties, including natural attributes, parcel
boundaries, critical areas, buffer areas,
structures, fences and “building zones.” During the
next easement monitoring cycle, those maps can be
downloaded into the GPS device and used to navigate
and relocate features and parcel or zone boundaries
on the ground during our annual stewardship visits.
The entire population
of Bainbridge Island and the Puget Sound region
benefit from the protection of our natural
resources. The documentation of our environmental
attributes has not always been accurate or available
through local municipalities or other entities. The
Bainbridge Island Land Trust strives to improve this
information through its continued on-the-ground
stewardship programs and increasing its use of
technologies, such as GIS and GPS.

Counseling services are available right in the

students. Students seek BYS counseling for urgent,
one-visit crisis situations as well as
multiple-visit care to support victims of abuse,
depression, and anxiety. Bainbridge Youth Services
also provides a jobs service program, and more than
1,000 students are currently enrolled. This service

Contact person:

Email address:

Phone:
(206) 780-6911
Organization mission
statement:
The mission of the Island Music Guild is to
enrich lives through music, and to advance
the quality and accessibility of music
education and musical experiences in our
community.
Amount of grant or
funding need: $3,000
Purpose of funds:
To install a chair-lift to make access
to our upper studios and classrooms more
accessible to folks who have some
difficulties getting around. As our upper
floor has expanded in size, ada permits are
required before we can link the upper storey
areas together. A simple chairlift will
both serve to provide the necessary help and
access for those in need who wish to
participate in the music lessons and classes
that IMG has to offer and at the same time,
permit us to make the upper storey floor
plan connected and more convenient to all
users. An effective folding motorized
chairlift costs about $2000 plus $1000
installation costs.
