Board of Trustees
Our Board of Trustees serve as ambassadors on behalf of the Foundation and guide the work we do in the community.  The Trustees are wide ranging in experience, backgrounds and perspectives but share one very critical trait: the strong desire to encourage philanthropy that supports the long-term health of our community.  We are grateful and fortunate to have leaders in our community willing to serve and lead the Foundation.

Leonard D. Beil and his wife Stella Ley have lived on Bainbridge Island since 1998.  After retiring from US West, Len has devoted much time to community service and helping others, including working as Executive Director of Catholic Community Services, as Executive Assistant to the President at Seattle University, and then bicycling around the world raising scholarship money for Seattle University. Len has received recognition for his volunteer service, including Seattle University’s 1986 Alumni Community Service Award and the 2008 BI Kiwanis Citizen of the year.  Locally, Len is a member of St. Cecilia’s parish, was the President of the Interfaith Council of North Kitsap in 2009, and has served on the board of the Interfaith Volunteer Caregivers of Bainbridge Island, including serving as Board President.  He received a BCS and Doctorate from Seattle University and an MBA from the University of Oregon.

Anne Shermack Blair (joining board in May 2010) is a 34-year resident of Bainbridge Island.  She also is a former teacher with more than 30 years experience as a professional nonprofit manager and executive director. A founding board member of Leadership Kitsap and the Puget Sound Restoration Fund, her background includes volunteer leadership on local, regional and national boards and commissions as diverse as Children’s Hospital and Regional Medical Center, Olympic College, National Faculty of Arts and Sciences, National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, Community Salmon Recovery Technical Review, Kitsap Community Foundation, Junior League of Seattle and International Association of Junior Leagues, Bainbridge Library and Bainbridge Island Arts and Humanities Council. She is the recipient of the Mary Maxwell Gates Community Leadership Award and was elected to the Olympic College Hall of Fame in 1998.

He taught science in the middle school for 10 years, commuting the last two years from the Island. Soon after arriving, however, he was drawn into conversations about starting a private middle school on the Island; Hyla Middle School started in 1993 with Paul serving as the head of the school. In 2007, he stepped down as head of the school, but continues teaching 8th grade algebra. He has served on the BCF board since 2007.

James F. (Jim) Chapel and his wife Faith moved to Bainbridge Island in 2000.  Jim had a 30-year career with the YMCA, including positions in Tucson, Phoenix, Santa Monica, Los Angeles and Portland.  He retired in 1987 as C.E.O. of the Portland Association.  Jim also ran his own career management company, CHAPEL STOWELL, for a few years prior to moving to Bainbridge Island.  Always active in community volunteer challenges, Jim has been President of his alma mater (University of Arizona) National Alumni Association, President of the Lake Oswego Rotary club, President of Health Housing and Human Services on Bainbridge, to list a few. Fundraising has been a particular passion, and Jim has been involved in organizing and conducting numerous campaigns.
